Recommended Prerequisite:  ELL III or IPT oral scores of D, E or F and IPT

reading and/or writing scores of Limited English Proficient and/or Fully English Proficient.

Course Description

 

A course of study for non-native speakers of English whose proficiency level is below adopted standards as established by oral and written tests.  The course provides for a sequential development of English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Instruction is based on adopted texts and supplementary materials for each skill level.

 

Course of Study

 

First Semester

·        Standard Conventions of English/Grammar


             Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL III and:

o       Parts of speech

o       Capitalization

o       Standard punctuation

o       Subject-verb agreement

o       Comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs

o       Usage of pronouns

o       Usage of singular, plural, and possessive nouns

o       Verb tense

o       Negative words

o       Recognize errors in sentence structure

o       Combine sentences to form new sentences

o       Sequence sentences to form paragraphs

o       Identify simple subjects and simple predicates (verbs)

o       Identify parts of business letters and addressed envelopes

o       Spell affixed words

o       Identify correctly formed contractions

·        Standard ELL Functions

    • Language functions at the ELL IV level are those functions from ELL I, II and III levels which need to be reinforced to meet specific needs of students in an ELL IV level class.

     ·  ELL Strategies

           Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks covered in ELL III:

o       Use appropriate reading strategies to skim, scan, take notes and question

o       Extend and apply reading vocabulary

o       Make predictions and respond to literature

o       Interpret, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate written text

o       Read and present orally

o       Read independently

o       Make inferences, draw conclusions, extend a story

o       Analyze purpose, main ideas, biases, point of view, and persuasive devices

o       Select resource material for application to real life situations

 

  • Vocabulary

 Expands vocabulary essential to:

    • engage in analytical, creative, descriptive, expository, journalistic,
    • narrative, personal, persuasive, research, and technical/business modes of writing
    • write personal essays and talk about self and others
    • complete and process application forms, such as driver's
    • licenses, resumes, college applications, etc.
    • identify and describe feelings in conversation, drama, poetry, and
    • personal letters
    • schedule social engagements
    • make appointments

 

Second Semester

·        Standard Conventions of English/Grammar

Is able to use and understand all skills covered in ELL III and:

o       Identify correctly spelled homophones

o       Recognize multiple meanings of words

o       Use context clues

o       Recognize propaganda techniques

o       Sequence events

o       Make inferences and draw conclusions

o       Identify cause and effect relationships

o       Identify fact and opinion

o       Identify details

o       Identify author's purpose

o       Interpret figurative language

o       Recognize author's point of view

o       Effectively use reference materials

o       Follow written or graphic directions

·        Standard ELL Functions

o       Language functions at the ELL IV level are those functions from ELL I, II

and III levels which need to be reinforced to meet specific needs of

students in an ELL IV level class.

 

     ·    ELL Strategies

Is capable of performing the following tasks as well as all tasks covered in ELL III:

 

o       Interpret literary elements and figurative language

o       Respond to literature by making personal, historical, and visual connections

o       Interact with text to form personal interpretations

o       Analyze the influence of an author's background

o       Use research to validate a personal interpretation

o       Apply elements of literature and literary devices in evaluating critically

o       Employ the following strategies:  highlighting, underlining, questioning, note taking, and characterizing.

 ·        Vocabulary

 Expands vocabulary essential to:

o       make notes in preparation for interview purposes

o       clarify and restate information as needed

o       mediate disputes and resolve conflicts

o       elicit information and ask clarification questions

o       negotiate solutions to problems, interpersonal misunderstandings, and disputes
