Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to dance as a recreational and physical education activity. Dance elements and social responsibilities associated with dancing will be discussed. Various folk and square dance patterns will be introduced.
Course of Study
The emphasis of this course is on the attainment of knowledge and acquisition of skill relative to folk and square dance patterns. The proposed sequential order for teaching these activities is:

· Terminology
o Step-Hop
o Schottische
o Polka
o Waltz Step
o Two Step
o Mazurka
· Basic Folk Dance Steps
o Walk, Run, Leap, Hop, Skip, Slide, Jump, Gallop
o Step-Hop
o Schottische
o Polka
o Waltz Step
o Two Step
o Mazurka
· Folk Dance Forms
o Individual formations
§ Alone without touching
§ In a line, circle, or broken circle (with a leader at one end)
§ Neighbors may join hands, hook arms, put hands to shoulders or about the waist, or just interlace little fingers.
o Group formations
§ Short lines
§ Single or double circles
§ Parallel lines
§ Squares
§ Stars
§ Triangles
o Partner formations
§ Closed (facing and close as for ballroom dance)
§ Open (side by side)
§ Shoulder-waist (man’s hands at the woman’s waist and her hands on his shoulders)
§ Butterfly (partner’s facing, hands joined, and arms outstretched at shoulder height)
