| Announcements | | Congratulations to HFA students Shalom Rottman-Yang and Jyotishka Biswas. Their Siemens team project won Regional Finalists status, and they were one of 5 teams that competed in Atlanta. In January, they published a paper on their research, about which their research mentor Dr. Jay Dickerson, Associate Professor of Physics and Chemistry at Vanderbilt stated: "Jyoti Biswas and Shalom Rottman-Yang have had their first-author article, entitled Freestanding Carbon Nanotube Films Fabricated By Post-Electrophoretic Deposition Electrochemical Separation, accepted by the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. This is an outstanding achievement for any student, let alone two high school students." These are accomplishments through the Vanderbilt School of Science and Math.
Also, congratulations to Shalom Rottman-Yang, Ben Rost, Joann Welch, and Fiona Sappenfield. They have been selected as candidates for the Presidential Scholar, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating seniors. Each year 3,000 candidates are identified based on having scored exceptionally well on the SAT or ACT.  HFA RANKED BY US NEWS & WORLD REPORT HFA was recently featured on the US News & World Report "Gold Medal List." We were ranked #26 out of 21,000 public high schools in the US.
HFA also made the Top 50 list for the "Best Math & Science Schools" in the US, coming in at #44. Nearly 600 schools that qualified for the Gold, Silver, and Honorable Mention lists of the U.S. News Best High Schools were then evaluated based on their students' participation rates and performances on AP® exams in math and science.

Hume-Fogg named 2011 Blue Ribbon School posted by: Mashburn, Noelle B - MNPS at Sep 15, 2011 10:31:00 AM Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School has been named a 2011 Blue Ribbon School. The school currently ranks among Tennessee’s Top 10% in academic achievement and was awarded in the category of High Performing School.
In a press release issued by the U.S. Department of Education, Secretary Arne Duncan says, “America's long-term economic prosperity and civic engagement depends on our children receiving a world-class education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their success is an example for others to follow." The release also states that a total of 305 schools across the U.S. were named 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Schools can be awarded for academic excellence or for success in closing the achievement gap. All schools, 256 public and 49 private, will be honored at an awards ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washington, D.C.
