School Counselors

How do the School Counselors help students?

Many people have misconceptions about counselors. Counselors are not just for students who are in trouble or having troubles. Your school counselor does, however, help students solve problems, set goals, create personal plans for achieving those goals and act as an educational resource and support person. Using your school counselor does not make you a needy person, rather a proactive person. Most problems can be avoided by good planning and most personal goals can be achieved if they are made real by sharing them with others.

School Counselors can:

· Help with life’s challenges        · Provide support with school transitions

· Take problems seriously and help find solutions        · Keep conversations confidential

· Make available resources for college and career planning

· Support teachers and parents        · Make referrals for community resources

· Keep up with graduation requirements        · Give information about credit recovery

· Provide financial aid resources        …and much more!

If your child is having a social, academic, or emotional problem that makes it hard to concentrate in school, please let his/her counselor know! Some of the topics the counselor can address are:

Bullying            Divorce        Stress        Study Skills    Time Management

Body Image    Substance Abuse
Career Exploration        Respect for others
