FACE Meeting Minutes

October 18, 2006

Welcome

Information from members and Staff

  • We are currently training teachers in transition planning, so that we meet the new requirements of IDEA 04
  • Special education has seen an increase in the number of students with disabilities graduating with a regular education diploma
  • A Vanderbilt project that involves job shadowing is currently underway
  • State wide high school reform team is examining the current diploma structure in Tennessee

Conference Update

  • Reviewed conference agenda
  • Communication included e-mail to schools, flyers to students and a press release to local news agencies
  • Job duties for the conference were reviewed

Preparation for Board Member Visit

  • Possible issues to be discussed
    • Parent communication
    • School climate for students with disabilities
    • Instructional supports for teachers
    • Inclusion needs
    • High stakes testing for students with disabilities
    • Reduction of PE staff in schools
    • Additional planning time for teachers
    • Educational Assistant issues
      • Pay, educational qualifications, and training

  • Positive Behavior Supports workshop for parents
  • Communicating with the State Board of Education about our diploma concerns
  • Continue work on Special Education Dictionary
  • Start work on the newsletter
