The Leadership Development course is a two-semester course that may be continued for an additional two semesters the following year for dual high school and college credit. The leadership program is being offered at all Metro high schools through a unique partnership with Alignment Nashville, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving public education in Nashville.
Leadership Development students demonstrate a strong potential for leadership before they enter the class. The Leadership Development course combines academic content and leadership development activities to further develop leadership skills and empower these future student leaders. By building personal assets and creating a caring and supportive environment for all, the Leadership Development class aims to equip students with the skills they need to be effective leaders in the Hillsboro and Nashville communities. This program taps into a wide range of student leaders who represent various sections of the student population, so every student in the class plays a critical role in the successful outcomes of individual and group leadership goals.
A key focus of the Leadership Development course is the process of becoming a leader through service learning and carrying through with a service project. Service Learning combines volunteer service and classroom instruction. The service learning method used in this course was developed Phi Theta Kappa and utilizes a “humanities approach” to leadership development. Alignment Nashville will support students with their individual service projects that will commence during the second semester.
