NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing- Sponsored by Bank of America, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests. Awardees are selected for their demonstrated, outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology/computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history and plans for post-secondary education. Each qualified awardee will receive $500 in cash; a laptop computer, provided by Bank of America; a trip, including airfare for nonlocal winners, some meals and lodging, all provided by Bank of America, for each awardee and one accompanying parent or legal guardian, to attend the Bank of America Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony, March 7, 2009, in Charlotte, N.C.; AND an engraved award for both the student and the student's school. $5 Million National Co-op Scholarship Program- The National Commission for Cooperative Education offers merit scholarships for high school seniors and community college transfer students. American Legion, “Need a Lift?” publication- Document available online that lists information on 1,400 colleges and universities around the country and one section is devoted to various scholarships, grants, and loans. Boston University- Several scholarships available, but the most prestigious are the Trustee, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Alexander Graham Bell, and the School of Education Presidential scholarships. They are all four year, full-tuition scholarships for students who are graduating at the top of their class. Applications are available at www.bu.edu/admissions/scholarships. Application for admission to the university and the scholarship applications must be submitted by December 1, 2008.
Covenant College, Middle Tennessee Wilberforce Scholarship- Must live in or attend school in Middle Tennessee, have a GPA of 3.0 and 1120 SAT or 24 ACT score. Evidence of leadership in athletics, student government, church or civic organizations, and demonstrate a Christian character and commitment in dealing with an obstacle or injustice. Application can be found at www.covenant.edu/scholarships and must be submitted by December 1, 2008. Application for admission to the college must also be made by December 1, 2008.
Milligan College, The Betty Goah Scholarship for Advancing Diversity at Milligan College- Must be a US citizen or have permanent residence, minimum 21 ACT or 3.0 GPA, must provide Hope Scholarship, Hope combined with the Betty Goah Scholarship covers full tuition and fees and housing. Tennessee Concrete Association Essay Contest- Open to all high school students ages 16-18, must write an essay about how concrete effects the environment, the impact of using concrete to build homes or commercial buildings, concrete’s benefit to society, or something similar. Local winner will receive $250 cash prize and be entered into a national competition for a scholarship valued up to $5,000 depending on the program the winner pursues in college. Scarlett Family Foundation Scholarship- A minimum GPA is not required but the Foundation prefers applicants with a 2.5GPA or higher, must enroll full time in a 4-year college or university and be planning to pursue a degree in business or has demonstrated entrepreneurial interests or leadership. Rhodes College, Jack H. Taylor Fellowship in Physics- Must complete application packet which asks about science and math awards or honors, past and present activities, a statement about your professional aspirations, an essay about what is interesting to you about physics. Award is for up to $15,000 and is renewable for three years. Application is available at www.rhodes.edu/finaid/1413.asp and must be submitted for consideration by January 15, 2009.
University of Memphis Emerging Leaders- Minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum ACT/SAT of 21/980, demonstrated leadership positions either at school or in community organizations, full base tuition of $5,500, is renewable for four years. East Tennessee State University Honors Scholars Program- 29+ ACT or 1280+ SAT scores, high school GPA of 3.5 or higher, evidence of community and leadership activities, commitment to a 4-year degree. Selected students will receive a full scholarship covering eight semesters of college including tuition and fees, a book allowance, and s standard dorm and meal package. Hendrix College, Hays Memorial Scholarship- Available to graduating seniors who have a minimum 3.6 GPA and a minimum ACT composite of 32 or SAT of 1410. Scholarship covers tuition, room, board, and required fees. Counselors have to nominate students by November 19, 2008, so if a student is interested they need to let their counselor know by November 5th. Western Kentucky Freshmen Scholarships- Western Kentucky University has announced that the deadline for all beginning freshmen scholarship applications is January 15, 2009. McKelvey Foundation Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship- Scholarship for graduating seniors who plan to attend a university within the 50 United States and who own and operated a business for at least one year (non-profits are acceptable), must have at least one paid employee, have sales revenue (unless it’s a non-profit). The Princeton Prize in Race Relations- Open to all students in grades 9-12 who have been actively involved in programs that promote positive race relations, students who apply are eligible to win a cash award of up to $1000. KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program- Must be a graduating senior with a financial need who will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree from a college or university in Tennessee. Must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher and be a US citizen or permanent resident. Applications can be completed online at www.kfcscholars.org and will be available from December 1, 2008 until February 10, 2009.
Alabama A&M will be hosting their annual High School Senior Day on Saturday, November 8, 2008, beginning at 7:30am. This program is being held in conjunction with NASA. Activities for the day include visitation to academic displays and breakout sessions, entertainment, tours of the campus, and a NASA onsite display.
Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be served. Additionally, the University will be hosting guests at the football game between Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M at 1:00pm that day.
