FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
about the Learning Center

Dear Students and Parents,

At J. E. Moss Elementary School, we are very lucky to have a large, lovely Learning Center full of wonderful things which can help you love reading, thinking, and learning.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Library Behavior

  • Be courteous
  • Be responsible
  • Be safe!

We begin each year talking about how if we observe these three rules, we won't need any other rules! We discuss what it means to be courteous, responsible and safe and then use specific situations to decide which rule it exemplifies or which rule it breaks

Book Check Out Policies - Students

  • Students in grades K-1 may check out one (1) book at a time.  Teachers may use their discretion in determining whether or not to allow students to take books home.
  • Students in grades 2-4 may check out two (2) books.
  • Books are checked out for two (2) weeks.  They may be renewed up to three (3) times.
  • We do not charge fines for overdue books; however, students must return an overdue book before additional books may be checked out.
  • Students who lose or damage books beyond repair will be charged the replacement cost of the book.  Students who habitually lose books and do not pay for them will be limited to using books only in the library.

Library Cards

  • All students will receive a library card and lanyard with a pocket.
  • Lanyards and cards MUST remain at school.
  • If possible, please find a place for the student to hang their lanyard, rather than keep it in their desk.
  • Replacement lanyards are $3.00 each.
  • Students who come to the library must have their lanyard around their neck.  Students whose cards are in their pockets, lost, at home or are wrinkled, wet, torn or damaged in any way may not check out.

Book Check Out Policies – Staff

  • Staff may check out an unlimited number of books for an unlimited time.
  • No library books will accrue fines (also known as late charges) for faculty.   However, staff must pay for or replace books that are lost or damaged while checked out under their name.
  • Students may not check out books for a teacher unless they have the teacher’s library card.
  • Please let me know if you would like a library book basket in which to keep your library books.

Periodicals

  • There is no magazine checkout for students.  Magazine must be used in the library only.
  • Staff may check out an unlimited number of magazines, with no time limit.  However, due to the popularity of some of the titles such as Teacher’s Helper, we ask that you make your copies and return the magazine to the library as soon as possible, so that others may benefit.

Nystrom Kits

These fabulous social studies kits are in the Teacher Resource Room off the library.  Please check them out with the librarian before taking them to your classroom.  All parts of the kit must be accounted for.
