Processing Skills
SECOND GRADE

Orientation to Information Resources - 2nd Grade

These skills were introduced in previous grades. They should be reviewed and reinforced.

The learner:

• locates the Library Media Center (LMC)
• calls the Library Media Specialist (LMS) and staff by name and asks for assistance
• exhibits proper respect and care of materials, facilities, and equipment
• locates and names the easy, nonfiction, paperback, and magazine sections of the collection
• identifies left to right, top to bottom shelf arrangement
• demonstrates that easy books are arranged in alphabetical order by author's last name
• tells that a book's spine label gives information about its location on a shelf
• tells the difference between fiction and nonfiction
• locates specific subjects of interest in the nonfiction section (with assistance)
• keeps books and materials in order when browsing
• locates encyclopedias and dictionaries and explains in simple terms the purpose of their use
• locates the library catalog (card/online) and observes it in use
• locates and uses the technology areas (with assistance)
• identifies information in a variety of formats: print and non-print (including electronic media)
• uses appropriate procedures at the circulation desk to checkout and return materials
• demonstrates a positive feeling about books, stories, and the LMC as a place for learning and fun

These skills are introduced in Second Grade.

The learner:

• locates the biography and fiction sections and defines the terms
• locates atlases and explains the purpose of their use
• tells that encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases are part of the reference section

Selection and Utilization of Information Resources - 2nd Grade

These skills were introduced in previous grades. They should be reviewed and reinforced.

The learner:

• verbalizes requests for help in locating materials
• alphabetizes words as an aid in locating materials
• selects books based on interest and/or need (with assistance)
• selects easy/fiction books arranged alphabetically by author's last name
• demonstrates that when selecting from the nonfiction section, books about the same subject are grouped together
• identifies the parts of a book including cover, spine, bar code, spine label, and title page
• identifies the title as the name of the book
• tells that the title of the book and the names of the author and illustrator are found on the title page
• explains the difference between an author and illustrator
• uses magazines for information and/or recreational reading
• listens for simple information and uses visual clues to gain knowledge
• identifies major components of a computer: monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer
• demonstrates proper beginning skills in operating the computer keyboard and mouse
• gathers information using a variety of media: print and nonprint, including CD-ROM, World Wide Web, and other electronic media (with assistance)
• uses resources available outside the school (public libraries, people in the community, and other resources)

These skills are introduced in Second Grade.

The learner:

• locates books in the library online catalog with assistance
• uses the spine label to locate a book
• uses the table of contents and index as guides to the contents of a book
• identifies additional information on the title page: publisher and place of publication
• uses guide words in a primary dictionary or glossary to locate words and their meanings
• uses primary encyclopedias and atlases (print and electronic) as sources of information
  
  

Organization and Presentation of Information - 2nd Grade

These skills were introduced in previous grades. They should be reviewed and reinforced.

The learner:

• works independently and/or cooperatively in groups
• sorts, classifies, and sequences information
• compares and contrasts information from different sources
• demonstrates that information can be shared in a variety of formats
• conveys information orally using complete sentences
• retells a story
• uses pictures and objects to present information
• records information using words, phrases, and/or sentences
• uses both print and nonprint, including computers and other electronic media, to present information (with assistance)
• evaluates the process and presentation

These skills are introduced in Second Grade.

The learner:

• takes notes in his/her own words
• sequences notes for written presentation
• uses webbing, Venn diagrams, simple charts, graphs, or other forms to organize information
• demonstrates an understanding of plagiarism

Literature/Information Appreciation - 2nd Grade

These skills were introduced in previous grades. They should be reviewed and reinforced.

The learner:

• listens to literature for pleasure and information
• demonstrates comprehension of materials read or heard
• uses illustrations to acquire a greater understanding of the story
• predicts outcomes
• relates elements of literature to personal experiences
• participates in storytelling, drama, songs, puppetry, fingerplays, and poetry
• shares books by favorite authors and illustrators
• identifies the unique styles of authors and illustrators
• identifies books that are special award winners: Caldecott, Volunteer State, Coretta Scott King, etc.
• demonstrates awareness of literature from various cultures and genres: nursery rhymes, fairy tales, folklore, poetry, etc
• identifies differences between original works and adaptations
• uses visual media (nonprint)
• shares opinions about materials heard, read, or viewed

No new skills are introduced in Second Grade.
