Dear 8th grade Students and Parents,

¡Bienvenidos! Welcome back to Spanish for most of you! Spanish I for High School credit will be a lot of work, but I have no doubt you are up to the challenge. Since most of you have already had my Spanish class in 7th grade, you know my expectations and routines. For those of you that are new to Spanish (former French students!), you will have a challenging year but are more than capable of success! This year the Spanish I for high school credit classes will use a textbook that we first used last year--¡Avancemos!. It is a great book for this class because it has new and different vocabulary and grammar (for the most part) than the book we used in 7th grade.

For those who did not have me last year, let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Amy Cate and this is my ninth year at J.T. Moore. My B.S. is in Spanish with a double major in Secondary Education from Vanderbilt. I am originally from Somerset, KY. My extended family is also from Nashville. The summer after I graduated from college, I went on a 6-week mission trip to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala where I worked in an orphanage and a clinic. I had the opportunity to go back again two summers ago and it was an incredible experience! I have also traveled to Costa Rica, Italy, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, England, Scotland, France, Spain and Romania. I love to travel!

Students—Here’s what I want you to know about my class: I want my classes to be about you and what you are learning; my goal is not only to teach you how to speak, read and write in Spanish, but also about the cultures that speak Spanish. You are academically capable and my expectations will be high. I also want you to be responsible and cooperative. I will respect and help you and I expect the same.

Parents—I ask your support in your student’s endeavors. Praise for success and encouragement and help in difficult times are essential, especially so with Spanish since many are new to serious language learning. I also want to support you. Please do not hesitate to contact me here at school (298-8095 ext 1017), or my email is amy.cate@mnps.org if you have questions, suggestions or concerns. Working together, we can ensure your student will have an outstanding year in Spanish at J.T. Moore

Thanks!

Amy Cate
