Academics

All academic courses at Hume-Fogg are taught at either the honors or Advanced Placement level. All classes emphasize writing, critical thinking, and analysis. Students are required to take 6 courses per semester and must accumulate no fewer than 22 credits. Hume-Fogg offers two interdisciplinary courses for sophomores and juniors: World Studies and American Studies, which combine the English and history requirements. The Hume-Fogg curriculum promotes a balance between the purely academic and the creative arts. Students also participate in athletics, service organizations, and academic competitions.

Rank and GPA

Given its selective admissions practices and rigorous academic program taken by all students, Hume-Fogg does not provide rank. The cumulative average is determined by averaging the semester grade of all courses, with the grade for each Carnegie unit being of equal value. The numerical average for Advanced Placement courses is weighted by the addition of five (5) points to each grading period and the examination. The numerical average for Honors courses is weighted by the addition of three (3) points to each grading period and the examination. The cumulative average is determined with the following numerical equivalents:

Letter Grade Number Grade 4.0 Equivalent
A 93-100 4.0
B 85-92 3.0
C 77-84 2.0
D 70-76 1.0

Advanced Placement Courses

Because of the rigorous nature of the academic program, many students do not enroll in AP classes until their junior year. Teacher approval and demonstration of exceptional academic ability are required for enrollment in AP classes. Hume-Fogg recommends that students limit the number of AP classes in a year as follows:
