No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is a federal law approved in 2002. The purpose of NCLB is to establish a federal accountability system for all school districts in the United States. It requires 100% of students to be proficient or advanced in all subjects by 2013-2014. It also requires that all schools achieve a graduation rate of 90% by 2013-2014. To reach these goals, districts must meet increasingly difficult targets each year. This year, Tennessee school districts were asked to meet targets that were much more difficult than last year.

In 2008, Metro Nashville Public Schools entered Restructuring 1 status for failing to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for all student groups. Click here to see detailed TCAP scores that were included in these AYP results.
Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, MNPS was fortunate to have input and staff assistance from the State Department of Education to help the district meet the tougher standards. By thoroughly reviewing our data, our staffing, and our programs, MNPS has implemented a number of interventions, new programs and additional staff to help meet all students’ educational needs.
While MNPS did not meet AYP overall, the district continues to show much progress. When the State Department of Education released the No Child Left Behind test results for Tennessee schools for 2007-2008, nine Metro Schools were moved off the High Priority list and into Good Standing status. They represent one-third of all schools to be removed from the state’s High Priority List, as only 28 schools statewide moved off the list.
