You Have Options In the fall of 2007, Metro Schools began a detailed look at the district’s student assignment policies and procedures. After much study and community feedback, the district adopted a new School Choice Plan that is expected to significantly improve all aspects of student assignment. One of the most significant pieces of the new plan is the elimination of special transfers. Special transfers, which had previously been accepted throughout the summer months, will no longer be accepted, except in extreme hardships.
Instead of the special transfer process, MNPS will offer parents a period of Open Enrollment. Through Open Enrollment, students will be eligible to enroll at any school in the district, provided the school has open seating. Parents wishing to take advantage of the Open Enrollment period and to choose a school outside their child's assigned zone MUST be able to provide transportation to and from school.
Open Enrollment is designed to not only provide quicker, easier choices for families, but also to assist the district in preparing for the new school year. By implementing this period of Open Enrollment, the district will have much firmer enrollment numbers for each school and be better able to provide resources for each school.
This new plan has three main goals:
- It gives families more options in selecting the school that best suits their child’s educational needs.
- It enables the district to better prepare for the upcoming school year.
- It allows quicker, more effective communication with parents regarding school options.
Open Enrollment will run the entire month of March for placement during the 2009-2010 school year. For more information, contact the MNPS Customer Service Center at (615) 259-INFO (4636). |
