ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Have in mind at least three colleges/universities of interest? Go online to check out their deadlines for admissions and scholarships. Most places have deadlines during the first semester.

A copy of your official high school transcript is another piece of the application process for college/university admissions and scholarships. Seniors must pick up and complete a Request to Release Transcripts from Ms Chandler.

·MNPS Middle College CEEB code is 431712. This is needed when you complete applications for college/universities and scholarships, and registrations for various tests.

  • Interested in playing college sports? Go to www.eligibilitycenter.org. Interested student-athletes must create an account with the NCAA for eligibility requirements.
  • All 18 year old men must register with the Selective Service. Young men should register within 30 days of his 18th birthday either online at www.sss.govor complete a form at your local post office.
  • Avoiding Scams – Be aware of scholarship scams. You should never have to pay someone to find scholarships for you. All the information you could possibly need to complete the process is offered free in databases available from your local public library, college financial aid office, high school counselor, and the internet. If a search program for scholarships requests money from you, steer clear of them. Also be wary of anything that says money for college is guaranteed. Financial aid and scholarships are never guaranteed! The Federal Trade Commission has issued a consumer alert on scholarship search scams and can be viewed at: www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/scholarship.   • I hope you are adjusting to Middle College and NSCC’s expectations! For the college classes….and high school….be in class!!! If you are out, you must communicate with your instructors and teachers. Maintain an A or B average in your college classes to keep the Dual Enrollment Grant each semester.

  • Thursday, October 13: End of the 1st quarter for MNPS (Middle College) classes.
  • Friday, October 14: Planning/Records Day. Students do not report to their Middle College classes.
  • Monday, October 17: Professional Development Day. Students do not report to their Middle College classes.
  • Tuesday, October 18 thru Friday, October 21: Fall Break for MNPS (Middle College classes will not meet)
  • Monday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 18 – Fall Break for NSCC. Classes will not meet
  • Monday, October 31: Report Cards issued. Middle College classes only.
  • Tuesday, November 1: Parent Conference Day. Students do not report to their Middle College classes.
  • Wednesday, November 16: Progress Reports issued. Middle College classes only.

CREATE YOUR ACCOUNTto get a username and password.

Then go toMY PROFILE and complete your profile.

Proceed toONLINE APPLICATION and complete applications of your choice. Much of your personal information entered in CollegeforTN will be auto-populated in applications you choose to complete.

  1. Check out the “Scholar Dollars” website, www.tnscholardollars.com, the source for information about financing your college education in TN.
  2. Check out www.eCampusTours.comto assist in making the college search process simpler and more organized. Exciting enhancements on the site: Hundreds of virtual campus tours, schedule campus visits, and contact the admissions offices.

COLLEGE UPDATES! COLLEGE DAYS------GO VISIT!

Take advantage of the days you are not in classes to visit college campuses. Contact the admission offices to schedule your visits! Go online to colleges/universities of interest. Check out the EVENTS and you’ll find titles such as: Fall Preview Days, Junior/Senior Days, Orientations, etc. You may spend the day or a weekend to get a live and in color prospective. These are excellent opportunities to see which college/university fits you!

Tennessee State University - there is a TSU Counselor on the Nashville State campus Adrian Miller! She is a full service “One Stop Shop”. Students can pickup TSU applications and information about TSU programs and services. Mrs. Miller even provides mail service to the TSU Admissions Office and is also available to speak to those students who may be receiving an A.A.S. degree from NSCC but want to know courses needed if they decide to transfer to TSU for a Bachelor’s degree.

Mrs. Miller’s office is located in the Student Services Center, 2nd floor, S-215C (Admissions Office area). Students should have a seat in the Admissions area and she will come out and greet them. Her hours at Nashville State are Monday and Wednesday. 9:00 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

There is a “red” phone located on a table in the Admissions Office area that students can use to reach her. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Miller if she can be of any assistance.

Most colleges and universities want ACT and/or SAT scores sent directly to them after the test date. So……when you register for a test, indicate the college/university’s codes in order for ACT and/or SAT to send your scores.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Jackie Robinson Scholarship-Award: Up to $6,000; renewable for four years. Eligibility Requirements: Minority graduating high school seniors who have been accepted by a four-year, accredited college/university; academic achievement, leadership and financial need will be considered. 2011-2012 SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes gives high school seniors a chance to win a $1,000 for their education expenses at a college or private career school. One winner will be chosen every two weeks from October 28, 2011 through May 11, 2012. For complete details, visit offtocollege.info

FIRE: Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is sponsoring the 4th Annual “Freedom in Academia” Student Essay Contest. High school seniors are to write an essay explaining why free speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm the college experience. To enter, read the rules, regulations, and instructions posted at www.thefire.org/contests. The final day to submit an entry is November 5. 2011.

Scarlett Family Foundation offers scholarships to students pursuing a career in business. Seniors must graduate prior to June 1, 2012, plan to pursue a Business Degree at a public, private, and out of state colleges and universities that are four- year, and must demonstrate financial need. AXA Achievement Scholarship: Are you active in your community? Have you led a project that benefits others? Have you overcome personal challenges? You may qualify for $10,000 to $25,000 scholarship! Learn more and download and application at www.axa-achievement.com Apply by December 15, 2011.

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund-Up to $2,200 per semester, based on demonstrated financial need. Must be a U.S. citizen attending a public historically Black college or university. Contact the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund foundation for a list of participating colleges and universities; applications available through the member schools. Grants paid directly to the school. Burger King Scholars-Awards $1,000, $5,000 and $25,000 scholarships. Eligibility: Open to high school seniors and Burger King employees. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and work at least 10 hours per week or 40 weeks per year. Must participate in community service. Details and how to apply

UT-Knoxville: Regular application deadline is December 1. If students are applying for competitive scholarships and the Honors Program, they will need to apply for admission and scholarships/honors by November 1. Campus visits are encouraged. Register online at www.visit.utk.edu.

MTSU: Scholarship deadline December 1 – Students who submit their applications for admission, pay the $25 application fee, and submit a sixth- semester transcript by Dec. 1, 2011, will be automatically reviewed for academic scholarships. Separate applications may be required for scholarships such as ROTC and music.

Tennessee Tech. University: All students who apply for admission and scholarships by December 15, 2011, will be considered for a variety of Admissions Scholarships. Refer to the website www.tntech.edu/scholarships for detailed procedures.

East Tennessee State University has the Guaranteed Academic Performance Scholarship (GAPS) Award, $3,000 per year. Students with a 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 28 of higher (1240 SAT) will be offered. Students must complete the admissions application process by January15. Students can apply on line at www.etsu.edu

Austin Peay is looking for students with a GPA of 90 of higher and have held leadership positions. The President’s Emerging Leaders Program is valued at $3,000 a year. Applications and recommendations must be received by

Trececca Nazarene University: The Department of Music is holding auditions for scholarships for 2012-2013. Audition dates are: Saturday, November 19, Saturday, January 28, and Saturday, February 11. For more information call 615-248-1288 or visit www.trececca.edu/music/student.info

UCLA is pleased to announce the Jim Varney Scholarship for high school seniors from Kentucky and Tennessee who aspire to a career in theater and/or drama. This is a full, four year scholarship. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of a 3.75 and plan to enroll full-time. See Ms. Chandler for an application. The deadline is March 31, 2012.

Havard University: The prestigious university has announced undergraduate students from families earning less than $60,000 a year can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans! OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU

Alive Teen Retreat, sponsored by Alive Hospice, is an overnight weekend

retreat for high school students. In small peer groups, teens are encourage to safely share their grief experiences, express their feelings, and learn about grief in the lives of teenagers. Teens may participate in a variety of outdoor activities and challenges including team building, camp fires, high ropes course, climbing tower, canoeing, and zipline. These activities will allow them to connect with one another and help them build skills to cope with the loss in their lives. Alive Teen Retreat will offer a balance of fun, challenges, and self-discovery. Trained professionals and volunteers will walk beside them as they take these healing steps in their journey through grief. Call Alive Grief Support Services at 615-963- 4732.
