Schools Opting Out for 2009-10

When the Metro Nashville Board of Public Education originally voted to implement Standard School Attire, better known as SSA, an opt-out clause was written into the plan. This clause allows each school the chance to opt out of SSA. Principals must submit an application to district administrators explaining why they are seeking to opt out of Standard School Attire, including a show of support by the school’s students, parents and staff.

Schools opting out of Standard School Attire will be required to follow a Dress Code Policy provided by the school district. The following schools were granted approval to opt out of Standard School Attire for the 2009-2010 school year:

Hillsboro High

Hume-Fogg Magnet High

Meigs Magnet Middle*

Nashville Big Picture High School

Nashville School of the Arts

In addition to these schools opting out of Standard School Attire, nearly all other schools in the district have added to the acceptable list of shirt colors. For specific details to schools other than the eight listed above, please contact your child’s school.

* Many of the original elements of SSA remain. Please see Meigs website for full details.
