In 2007, Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools received a grant from the Tennessee Department of Education, Office of Coordinated School Health. The funds were made possible through a 2006 appropriation of the Tennessee General Assembly to expand the Coordinated School Health initiative to all school systems. Legislators approved the Coordinated School Health Expansion and Physical Activity Law (Public Chapter 1001) that same year.
The district immediately put this health grant to use for programs that teach and promote overall student wellness. MNPS offered the Coordinated School Health program to 12 pilot schools in 2007-2008, and added an additional 25 schools in the 2008-2009 school year. The Coordinated School Health program will be expanded to include all MNPS schools within the next five years.
