MNPS Announces Extended Learning plans for summer 2010 Las escuelas metropolitanas anuncian planes de Enseñanza Extendida para el verano del 2010
Metro Nashville Public Schools will be departing from a traditional summer school in 2010, instead providing specific, targeted instruction to students transitioning to and from high school who are in need of additional help to prepare for high school entrance or to recover credits needed for graduation. The change is part of a system-wide shift to provide highly-effective, year-round opportunities for students to receive the instructional support they need to be successful.
ENROLLMENT
*Enrollment for the Extended Learning Program will be by Invitation only. Middle and high school counselors will identify students who would most benefit from assistance for a successful transition to high school or to meet graduation requirements. All programs will be computer-based with supervision by instructional staff at school sites across the county
PROGRAMS
Content Recovery For Middle School Students
The Summer Content Recovery Extended Learning Program will offer two levels of content recovery for middle school students who need additional help. As with the credit recovery program, content recovery will be computer-based using the A+ catalog of middle school courses. With limited space available, sites will have a waiting list to fill any positions that remain vacant after the first three days of the program.
Enrollment Criteria Enrollment for the summer program will be prioritized based on the students with most need and available space as determined by middle and high school counselors.
Class Period Students go the entire summer schedule, beginning June 7 and concluding July 16.
Program Levels There will be two program levels, Transition I and Transition II. For both programs, students’ needs will be assessed to determine what interventions are needed.
- Transition I - seventh grade students who have been retained for two years and will turn 15 years of age before or during their 8th grade year.
- Transition II - 8th grade students who are at-risk of being retained in the 8th grade and who will turn 15 years of age before or during their 8th grade year.

Elementary Schools
There are no plans to offer a district-wide summer extended program for elementary students; however, funding was available for schools to submit individual requests. Many schools have provided additional help to students throughout the school year. |
