H.E.R.O. Program for Families in Transition

Which of these children is homeless? Can't tell?  Good!  

All children are entitled to a good education.  We are ready


Under the federal law, a student might qualify for our program if he/she lacks a “fixed, regular and adequate night-time residence”.  More specifically we can serve students who reside in any of the following situations:

·         Live in a shelter or transitional housing program

·         Live “doubled-up” with friends or relatives because they do not have housing of their own

·         Live in motels or at a campground because they cannot find or afford other housing

·         Live in a car, abandoned building or other location not normally designed for sleeping

 

 

Our goal is to provide children, families and schools in the Nashville community with the resources and services that they need to help homeless children and youth to be successful in school.  Services offered to children and families in transition may include, but are not limited to the following:

·         Assistance with school enrollment process and paperwork

·         Help with school issues, questions or concerns

·         Housing and community resource information

·         Obtaining birth certificates, immunization records and school records

·         Parent education sessions and workshops

·         Referrals for dental, medical and mental health services

·         School supplies

·         Standard school attire

·         Special distribution events (food boxes, hygiene products, holiday toys, etc.)

·         Transportation to school and school related events/activities

·         Tutoring services

Services offered to school staff and district employees may include, but are not limited to the following:

·         Annual training on the educational rights of homeless students

·         Assistance with the enrollment of students in transition

·         Collaboration on addressing student and family needs

·         Consultation on the federal law and district policy as it pertains to homeless students

·         Data tracking and reporting

·         Housing and community resource information

·         Monitoring district compliance with state and federal law is it relates to homeless students
