In order for students to succeed in the 21st century, they must be well prepared for a world that is dynamic and constantly evolving. Academic disciplines such as math and science are the drivers of innovation and technological advancement in the global economy. As such, there is renewed national interest in advancing the study and application of math and science to real world constructs and challenges. This interest has manifested itself into an educational movement that is focused on enhancing math and science curriculum, standards and educational opportunities for K-12 students in America. The Obama administration has highlighted STEM as a viable option for investment through Race to the Top funds, and both the Tennessee Department of Education and Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools have allocated Race to the Top funds to these efforts.
