2010-2011.......Barbara Mustiper, Fourth Grade Teacher
I received my Masters degree from Florida International University in Cultural Diversity in Education 2003. I have taught for 23 years in Florida at: Fairway Elementary & Indian Trace Elementary 3rd and 4th grade; Broward Estates Magnet School as Intermediate Science Specialist; and New River Middle Marine Science Magnet 6th grade Science teacher. In Tennessee, I taught here at Shayne 3rd and 4th grades. I retired from Shayne in 2011.
My philosophy of teaching is being a teacher takes dedication and committing to providing all children with the best education possible.
My favorite teacher was my 11th grade science teacher, Ms. McGriff. She was my first hands on science teacher and opened my eyes to a whole new world.
I have three sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law and a handsome grandson. I love reading and organic gardening.
2009-2010.......Margaret Taylor, Second Grade Teacher
I received Bachelor's degree from MTSU in 1993 and my Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Trevecca in 1997. I have had the privilege of teaching for 18 years in several schools including Shawb, Hattie Cotton, Maxwell, Glendale, and now Shayne.
My philosophy of education is simply that I want my students to love school. I want them to feel successful in whatever path they choose. I feel that if a child believes in himself, he can become anything he chooses.
I am married to Marsh Taylor and we have one daughter, Baylie. In my spare time I love to read and shop.
My favorite teacher was Sandy Heinrich, my first grade teacher, because she made school fun and exciting each day.
2008-2009......Cindy Core, First Grade Teacher
2007-2008........Hawaya Wilson, Kindergarten Teacher
Teaching is challenging, yet fascinating and fun. It is the only profession that allows you to collaborate with other people. Our common goal is to ensure each and every person involved experiences success. The most rewarding thing about teaching is the “aha” moment. The “aha” moment is birthed after a teacher has poured her heart and soul into a child and day after day receiving the same results. It may take weeks and sometimes months, finally the child understands and that is known as the “aha” moment. At this time the entire class rejoices because someone has succeeded.
I value the stance of interdisciplinary instruction. Interdisciplinary instruction permits students to see connectedness from separate fields of study. Students are allowed to carry over ideas from one subject area to another. As the children begin to expand upon prior knowledge from previous discussions, learning becomes a vehicle by which teachers transport students through a world of learning and allowing them to build upon their own core of knowledge. My goal for my students is to become investigators and thinkers for themselves. This in turn will ignite a fire that becomes an ongoing curiosity for the love of learning. It is my purpose to provide a haven for students to feel safe and appreciated so that lifelong learning and thinking is able to take place.
The factors that influenced me to be a teacher are not what people are used to hearing. I enrolled in Volunteer State Community College in the fall of 1995. My major at this time was X-ray technology. I wanted to be an Ultra-Sound Technician. The joy of watching parents seeing their babies for the first time was something I wanted to experience. However, after completing my first night of clinicals in 1997 and having to deal with livers, spleens and kidneys my mind was changed immediately.
It was the grossest thing that I had ever taken part in. I went home and asked myself “Is this really what you want to do for the rest of your life? Would it make you happy even if you were not getting a paycheck?” The thing that brought me joy each day was entering Baptist Hospital Child Care Center. It moved me to see children recognize the letters in their name and to count to ten for the first time without the teachers help.
I had become a part of laying a foundation of learning for several children in our society. They would start each day with morning review and the children would be just as happy as they were the day before. As a teacher I came to work excited and enjoyed the things I was doing. I found my purpose! However, teachers attended school the same length of time as engineers, business administrators, and physical therapists but their salaries did not compare to these other professionals. As a single woman would I ever be able to afford to buy a house?
The following day I changed my major to Elementary Education. My new academic advisor was Sydney Hardyway. He was exceptional. He taught me that if you lived your life fulfilling God’s purpose that all the other things would be added unto me. He told me teaching had many rewards and a paycheck was the least of them. He said touching lives allowed me to leave heart-prints across the world.
My greatest contribution repeats itself each year, knowing that I have the ability to bring households from different socioeconomic backgrounds together as a family. The children are able to rejoice when someone learns to tie their shoe for the first time. The children share with their parents when another child learns all of their letters and sounds. It is amazing to see the children celebrate each others accomplishments. The joy of watching a child celebrate another child is the most rewarding thing that I have ever experienced. 2006-2007........Jannifer Rice, First Grade Teacher
I earned my Bachelor's of Science Degree from Lipscomb College in 1970. That was so long ago that Lipscomb wasn't even a university yet! I started on my Mater's but the birth of my children demanded my time. My philosophy of education is to put a lot of focus on phonics and comprehension as a first grade teacher, but put more emphasis on the joy of reading and be an encourager.
My favorite teacher when I was growing up was my first grade teacher, Mrs. Calahan because she was compassionate and empathetic. There were no kindergarten classes in our small town, she was the one who basically introduced me to books.
I have 20 and a half years of teaching experience in various schools: Glenview, Napier, Rose Park, Hattie Cotton, and Shayne. A lot of frequent shifting of teachers happened in the '70's. In May 2011 I retired from teaching. During the 2011-2012 school year I remained at Shayne part time as its Title 1 Program Specialist. It is awesome to be a part of the Shayne family.
My husband Larry and I have been married for 36 years. We are blessed to have two sons. Jarrett and his wife Jana live in Nashville. David, his wife Melissa and family live in Oklahoma. My younger sister Beth is Shayne's secretary. Larry and I enjoy our back yard: planning flower bed arrangements, watching hummingbirds and relaxing in a comfortable swing. I like mind puzzles like Sodoku and cryptograms. I love to watch a great game of football and am a Titans' fan.
2005-2006..........Lori Blakely, Reading Specialist
Lori Blakely was selected by her peers as Shayne Elementary's 2006-2007 Teacher of the Year. She touches all the students and teachers at Shayne by serving as a driving force in the Reading curriculum.
Mrs. Blakely has been the Reading Specialist at Shayne for the past 2 years. She came from Hattie Cotton Elementary, where she also served as Reading Specialist, a Resource Teacher, and a Language-based classroom teacher for students with severe Language impairments. The 6 years before Hattie Cotton, she was a Resource teacher at Dupont Elementary where she taught reading to students from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. She began her teaching career at Maplewood High School teaching Reading and English to ninth and tenth grades.
Her degree is in Special Education from Greensboro College in North Carolina. She began her teaching career fifteen years later after re-certifying her teaching certificate at Tennessee State University.
Throughout the years, she has been actively working with children of all ages and abilities. Personally and professionally, she has been an advocate for teachers and students with special needs. This background is the driving force for her present position. She not only assists the teachers in their teaching of critical reading strategies, but works daily with children from Kindergarten through Fourth grades with reading difficulties. She is a voracious reader and easily excites students and teachers to have the same love for reading.
2004-2005..........Beverly Vannoy, Guidance Counselor
Beverly Vannoy, Guidance Counselor, was chosen as the first Teacher of the Year at Shayne Elementary School. She is a native Nashvillian and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at Trevecca Nazarene College. She taught second, third and fourth grades for 16 years and has been a counselor for 10 years. She is a violence prevention and conflict resolution trainer for Second Step and Crisis Prevention Intervention in Metro Schools and surrounding counties.
