Term of Office: 2012-2016
Jill Speering is a retired educator of 35 years and was named Teacher of the Year for Middle Tennessee in 2005. Mrs. Speering served as a teacher, researcher and trainer of teachers during her 25-year tenure with Metro Schools. Because of Jill’s commitment to the success of every child, she became an expert in the teaching of reading and writing. She studied the writing process at the University of New Hampshire. Mrs. Speering conducted research in her classrooms, and that research was published in local, state and national journals. Jill presented her research at conferences throughout the United States and in Canada.
As a grant writer, Jill raised $348,000 in grants she authored for instructional programs. For 13 years, Jill served on the adjunct faculty of Tennessee State University, where she trained teachers in graduate level classes. Jill believes that trainers of teachers are much more effective if they are actively teaching children while they are training teachers.
Jill is happily married. She has two daughters and four grandchildren. Two of her grandchildren attend Metro Schools.
