Due to construction delays, Overton High School will open for students on Wednesday, August 9. This summer, Overton High School was working to complete phase two of a two-year, $40 million renovation that will upgrade nearly every inch of the 14-acre campus.

As late as Wednesday, we thought we were going to be able to get this done but with final walk-throughs it was clear it wouldn’t be in the best decision for our teachers and our students. You may have heard other interviews earlier this week that indicated as such – and at the time, they were correct.

While we were confident the building would open on time to welcome our students on the first day of school, there would be no opportunity for staff to enter in advance to prepare classrooms, familiarize themselves with building and be ready to welcome students.

Metro Schools’ top priority is to have an orderly and safe first day of school. We want the experience to be seamless and exciting for our teachers and our staff. Delaying the opening of Overton by two days will give our teachers and staff the time they need to prepare for a great school year. Overton will have 28 teachers who are new to the school and 115 of a total of 175 staff will be working in new classrooms or office space – these educators need time to prepare their learning spaces for students. We don’t believe having teachers and students arrive at the same time – some of them, for the first time – is the best way to start the school year.

Students will make up these two days during the winter testing window in December (Dec. 12-15 will be full days, not half days, for Overton students).

This is a decision we had hoped to not have to make. We recognize this is an inconvenience and disappointment to our families, but we feel this is in the best interest of our students and faculty to start the school year in the best way. These renovations support comprehensive programs designed to develop graduates who are ready for college, careers and life and we’re confident we will have a great school year starting Wednesday, Aug. 9.
