Martin Professional Development Center

The city of Nashville has ushered in a new era for public education with the opening of the Martin Professional Development Center. Now - for the first time in the history of Metro Nashville Public Schools - our educators have a state-of-the-art facility dedicated solely to the quality of teaching and instruction in the classroom.

Without the infrastructure necessary to support the professional development of our teachers, our students will not succeed. Every great teacher employs a unique voice and combination of skills to challenge the intellect and fuel the imagination, and the new Martin Center will enable our teachers to enhance those skills with the 21st century technology that excites our students.

The dream that grew into the Martin Center began in 2006 when the Nashville Public Education Foundation established a public/private partnership to improve the educational experience of teachers. In just two years, the Foundation secured support from key donors and worked as partners with the school district to turn the vision of a new professional development facility into reality at the site of the historic Eakin Elementary School.

Although a high-tech building, the 44,000-square-foot Martin Center is truly a "people place" designed to fulfill its mission of producing superbly trained educators. From the soaring atrium that facilitates conversation to the well-designed class areas, the three-story building creates a catalyst for interaction among creative people who care deeply about children. All the tools are at hand, from wireless Internet access to the 7,200-square-foot Turner Hall that accommodates up to 500 guests as an auditorium or 350 guests seated banquet-style. The Center also provides 10 training classrooms, ample meeting space, a technology wing boasting four training labs and the 150-seat Cafe Metro.

For decades to come, the Martin Professional Development Center will serve thousands of Nashville educators, who in turn will serve hundreds of thousands of students. It's a ripple effect that knows no boundaries, as the future graduates of Metro Nashville Public Schools step into leadership roles in our city, state and nation. Behind the success of each young person, the Martin Center will have played a central role in ensuring the high-quality public education that enriches the lives of everyone in Nashville.
