Enhancing Safety Across Our Schools

Expanding the Concealed Weapons Detection System to All High Schools

At Metro Nashville Public Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priorities. After a successful pilot of the Evolv concealed weapons detection system at Antioch High School, we are expanding this safety measure to all district high schools in the coming weeks and months.

This decision follows an evaluation of the system’s effectiveness in enhancing school security while ensuring a welcoming and efficient entry process. Our goal is to implement consistent, effective, and minimally disruptive safety enhancements for every high school in the district.

What is Evolv?

Evolv is an advanced weapons detection system that enhances school security without the delays of traditional metal detectors. The system uses artificial intelligence and low-frequency radio waves to scan for potential threats while allowing students and staff to move quickly and naturally through the school’s entry points.

This technology is already used in hundreds of schools across the country, as well as at stadiums, concert venues, and other public spaces. The systems we are proposing to lease would incorporate upgrades from Motorola that would integrate into our existing security system platform, Avigilon.

What to Expect When You Arrive
  • Walk through naturally – Students can enter as usual, carrying their backpacks.
  • Minimizing false alerts – Students may be asked to remove laptops or other large metal objects to help reduce unnecessary screenings.
  • Quick and focused checks – If the system flags an item, staff will conduct a brief secondary screening in a designated area.

This process ensures safety while maintaining a welcoming environment where students start their day without unnecessary delays.

Why We’re Doing This

We recognize school safety is a shared responsibility, and the expansion of Evolv is one step in a broader multi-layered approach to security. This initiative aligns with other safety measures already in place, including:

  • Trained security personnel – School Resource Officers (SROs) and MNPS security teams.
  • Controlled building access – Video entry systems, security vestibules, and shatter-resistant film installations.
  • Enhanced technology – Security cameras and emergency communication tools.
  • School safety plans – Developed in partnership with Metro Nashville Police and practiced regularly through drills.

While no single solution can eliminate the risk of gun violence, we are committed to making our schools as safe as possible.

Implementation Timeline

The rollout of concealed weapons detection to all high schools will happen in phases over the coming months, allowing time for:

  • School-specific entry flow designs to ensure efficient student movement.
  • Staff training on system operation and security protocols.
  • Student and family education on what to expect.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation of students, staff, and families as we work together to implement these safety enhancements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Evolv system?

Evolv is an advanced security screening system designed to detect weapons while allowing for a fast and efficient entry process. Unlike traditional metal detectors, Evolv can distinguish between harmless metal objects (such as phones and keys) and potential threats.

How Does it Work?

The system uses low-frequency radio waves and AI technology to scan individuals as they walk through. If an item is flagged, school staff will conduct a quick secondary check, making the process faster and less invasive than traditional metal detectors.

Is Evolv Safe?

Yes. Evolv meets national and international safety standards, including those set by the IEEE and ADA. The technology is non-invasive and similar to the security screening systems used at major venues.

What if I Have a Medical Device?

If you have an implanted or wearable medical device, please consult with your doctor or the device manufacturer. If you prefer not to go through the Evolv system, alternative screening methods will be available — just let a staff member know.

How Much Does This Cost?

The district is proposing to invest $1.25 million annually in leasing and maintaining the Evolv system across all high schools.

Will This Be Expanded to Middle and Elementary Schools?

At this time, Evolv is being implemented only in high schools. Future expansion to middle and elementary schools will be considered based on data, effectiveness, and community input.

How You Can Help

Families and students play an essential role in making this transition as smooth as possible. Here’s how you can support this initiative:

  • Minimize unnecessary items – Bring only what you need to school each day.
  • Talk to your child – Help them understand what they carry in their backpack and how to move efficiently through the system.
  • Be patient – This is a new process, and we’ll continue making improvements along the way.

We’re Committed to Your Safety

We know this is a challenging time, and we want every student, staff member, and family to feel confident that we are taking every step possible to ensure safety in our schools. Together, we can create safer learning environments while ensuring that every student feels welcomed, valued, and protected at school.
