MNPS Eases Transition to School with Free School Supply Boxes for All Kindergarten Students

MNPS is proud to announce a new initiative designed to ensure every kindergarten student has the tools they need for a joyful and successful start to the school year. Through a partnership with PENCIL and the support of dedicated volunteers, all MNPS kindergarteners will receive a "Kinderbox" – a box of essential school supplies – delivered directly to their classrooms ahead of the first day of school. 

“Our goal is to make the first week of school as joyful and stress-free as possible for our students and families,” said Dr. Adrienne Battle, Director of Schools. “Thanks to the support of our partners and volunteers, our kindergarteners will be able to walk into a classroom that’s welcoming, well-equipped, and ready to inspire learning from day one.” 

The Kinderboxes are packed with core learning materials such as crayons, pencils, glue sticks, and other foundational items, eliminating the need for families to shop for individual supplies and helping to ensure that every student starts the year on equal footing. 

“PENCIL wants every child to have a solid start to the school year, so we are excited that MNPS chose us to make the Kinderbox project a reality,” said Christiane Buggs, PENCIL President & CEO. “Whenever MNPS identifies a need, we are honored to be the organization that answers the call, rallies the partners, and delivers the time, talent, and treasure of the community to support our students.” 

The supply boxes will be delivered to schools during the week of July 28 and placed on students' desks by the first day of school. In addition, MNPS and PENCIL are offering a special shopping event exclusively for kindergarten teachers, providing access to high-need classroom items in a relaxed and supportive environment. 

Kindergarten Teacher Shopping Event Details: 

• Thursday, July 31: 3:00–5:30 p.m. 

• Saturday, August 2: 9:00–11:00 a.m. 

• Location: DG PENCIL Box, 7199 Cockrill Bend Blvd.
