The North Sports Report: Middle school wrestling is the essence of sport

by Mark North, President of The FANS, Inc. (Foundation for Athletics in Nashville Schools)

Middle School Wrestling – City Championships

City Wrestling TournamentThe North Sports Report attended the City Championships for Middle School Wrestling this weekend at Antioch Middle School.  Let me start by saying: “Oh my goodness.”  If you have never attended the Middle School Wrestling City Championship, put it on your bucket list… Now!

First of all, it is sensory overload with two rings of non-stop action that makes Ringling Brothers look like a chess match.  The cool calm of extraordinary athletes, competing head to head amid chaotic surroundings makes it a must-see spectacle of sport.

Last year, the North Sports Report declared that the most fervent sports fan on Earth is the mother of a middle school wrestler.  If you disagree and want to argue that there exists some other more fervent fan, take it up with her…I dare you.

Everyday I’m Grapplin’…High School Wrestling State Championships

It is a banner year for Wrestling in MNPS.  The Tennessean said it best in its “High School State Wrestling Primer.”

Strong Metro presence: Nineteen wrestlers from 10 Metro schools might give Nashville its best chance for multiple winners since 2000. Overton 106-pounder Salih Musa, Glencliff 113-pounder Garang Madut and Hillwood 170-pounder Jahmare Anthony are the top contenders.”

In addition to Musa, Madut, and Anthony, Overton’s Chris Ocon also won the Region and is a contender for the state championship.  Nineteen wrestlers in the state championship tournament going to the mat for 10 different Metro schools. Awesome!

Freshman Basketball Championships

Congratulations to East Nashville Magnet’s Freshman Girls Basketball team and Hillwood’s Freshman Boys Basketball team on winning the City Championships this week.  The North Sports Report enjoyed watching the stars of the future play for the title in Hillwood’s Gymnasium.

February Madness…Basketball Tournament Time

District Basketball tournaments are underway at three MNPS locations, Hillsboro, Cane Ridge and Pearl-Cohn.  Go to a game (or 2 or 7) this weekend!

Spring Sports in Bloom

Practice officially started for Spring Sports this week as student-athletes take to the field (baseball and softball), court (tennis), pitch (boys soccer), and track.  They will be competing right up to graduation day.
