North Sports Report - November 14, 2013
by Mark North, president of The Fans, Inc
This Week’s Lesson from Sports: “We’re a Team”
Shortly after East Nashville’s improbable (some might say miraculous) fourth quarter come from behind victory in the first round of the TSSAA football playoffs, the North Sports Report stood near Eagles’ running back Lennox McAfee as he was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter. The crowd was still buzzing, and Lennox had scored two touchdowns and the dramatic deciding 2-point conversion to win the game. Over the noise of the celebration, the NSR overheard the reporter’s question: “How did it feel when You scored the winning points?” With the opportunity to bask in the glory of his splendid moment, Lennox did not hesitate and answered: “Oh, it’s not about that. We’re a team.”
In all things, we’re in it together. So, the next time we contemplate our disappointments or successes, let’s stop looking to dole out blame or grab the credit and remember the immortal words of Lennox McAfee to realize – that’s not what it’s about …we’re a team!
Top Performances from the First Round
Hillsboro Burros quarterback Michael Hughes has been voted the Tennessean’s top performer in Middle Tennessee for the first round of the playoffs. Michael completed 9 of 13 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for another touchdown in the Burro’s first round victory over the defending state champion.
The 3rd ranked and undefeated Overton Bobcats rode their stout defense and balanced rushing attack (Kimlee North – 147 yards, 2 TD’s; and Justin Martin – 135 yards, 3 TD’s) in their shutout first round victory.
Pearl-Cohn Firebirds running back Keshawn Vaughn rushed for 217 yards and a touchdown to lead his team to the second round.
In a miraculous (some might say improbable) 4th quarter, the East Nashville Eagles pulled out an unbelievable comeback as DeAndre Gavin stripped the ball from an opposing ball carrier and raced 58 yards for a touchdown. Lennox McAfee (121 yards, 2 TD’s) ran in the game winning 2-point conversion for a dramatic 22-21 victory.
Cane Ridge Ravens running back Nick Fuqua ran for 249 yards to finish the season with 2,011 yards rushing.
