Hume Award – Scholar-Athlete Award

Hume Award ProgramThe most prestigious honor bestowed on any Nashville High School football player is the Hume Award – presented for the past 70 years to a local football player on the basis of “scholarship, sportsmanship, individual performance and value to the team.” Thirteen students received the award for their respective schools, five are named finalists, and one Nashville football player joins a list of Hume Award winners that includes some of this city’s greatest young men.

The highlight of the award luncheon each year is when each coach stands and describes the finalist from his team…so proud of his player and so appreciative for the leadership and character each young man brought to the team. As the proud parents listened, Coach Peden from Antioch, Coach Parks from Cane Ridge, Coach Waite from East Nashville, Coach Murray from Hunters lane, and Coach Morrison (filling in for the recently retired Coach Anderson) from Overton described each finalist’s impact on the team, on the school and on the community.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees!

Throw it Back, Throw it Back, Waaaaay Back… Hume Award History

Since the first Hume Award was presented in 1944, only two scholar-athletes have won multiple Hume Awards. Dale Beck of Howard School won the award in 1947 and 1948. After graduating from Howard, Dr. Beck played football at Vanderbilt, played professional baseball, served in the Navy, and his career as a physician included stints as President of the medical staff at two hospitals.

How long ago did Dr. Beck win the Hume Award? Let’s see… Do you remember when the Howard School building of government offices was Howard School, an actual school building? Yeah, me neither.
