National expert in social and emotional learning speaks to Nashville leaders
Metro Schools and Peabody College at Vanderbilt University hosted Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, co-founder and board chair for the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), at their fourth Emerging Knowledge Forum last Thursday. CASEL is the nation’s leading organization advancing the development of academic, social and emotional competence for all students. Its mission is to help make evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) an integral part of education from preschool through high school. Through research, practice and policy, CASEL collaborates to ensure all students become knowledgeable, responsible, caring and contributing members of society.
Metro Schools is in the midst of a transformation in how it approaches social and emotional learning, thanks to a grant from NoVo Foundation and technical support from CASEL. In his presentation, Shriver talked about the benefits of incorporating SEL into all areas of education and tailoring the approach to the student’s age. He stressed that SEL is not simply a program to be completed. It is an approach to education that can be integrated into every facet of the school day.
In addition to his work with CASEL, Shriver is also chairman of the Special Olympics, which has more than 4 million Special Olympics athletes in 170 countries.
The Emerging Knowledge Forums are designed to bring national experts to Nashville to share and discuss national educational issues. Metro Schools and Vanderbilt host two to three such forums annually, with invitations going to local educators, community members and business partners.
