Saluting Excellence: Presidential Scholar, Haslam Scholar & and full ride to West Point
It's that time of year when the graduate accolades start to pile up. The tidal wave of good news can be overwhelming, and that's the way we like it! Here are three major honors for three stellar students:
- Hume-Fogg soon-to-be-graduate Qiaozhi (Chelsey) Guo is headed to the final round of the 2014 US Presidential Scholars competition. This national contest recognizes and honors some of the country’s most distinguished high school graduating seniors. Application is by invitation only based on exceptional scores on the SAT or ACT. Applicants are put through a rigorous selection process based on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities and an essay.
- MLK's Regina Tisdale is the only Metro Schools senior to be named a Haslam Scholar. This is UT-Knoxville's highest scholarship award, and it's given to just 15 students in the entire state. The scholarship includes full tuition for four years, room and board, a laptop computer, a study abroad program and $5,000 toward an individual research project.
- Jonathan Tracy, also of MLK, is headed to The United States Military Academy West Point on a full scholarship. Only 1,200 students out of 15,100 were selected through a rigorous application process to begin as freshman in the fall semester at West Point. Upon graduation, Jonathan will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army and serve for five years on active duty.
