Lisa Wiltshire named Director of Early Learning Innovation

Metro Schools is dedicated to providing high-quality prekindergarten to all Nashville families who want it. To lead that charge, Director of Schools Dr. Jesse Register has named Lisa Wiltshire as the Director of Early Learning Innovation. In this new role, Wiltshire will oversee the development of the district’s new Early Learning Centers at Ross Elementary, Bordeaux Elementary and Casa Azafrán. “Quality early learning experiences provide students a solid academic foundation. Our investment in pre-K will help our schools achieve excellence,” said Wiltshire. “We have a bold vision to ensure every child in Nashville who wants or needs it has access to a high-quality, affordable pre-K by 2018. I am very excited to lead the effort to make that vision a reality.”

Previously the Assistant to the Director for Strategic Planning and Management, Wiltshire has worked on the district’s successful turnaround efforts. Initially a volunteer on MNPS Achieves, the collaborative reform effort that developed initiatives in areas of need, she was later hired to manage the effort. As MNPS Achieves began to bear fruit, Wiltshire nurtured the programs it produced by managing the district’s Race to the Top grant allocations. She then helped bring them all together into Education 2018: Excellence for Every Student, the district’s five-year strategic plan.

Prior to joining Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools she earned a master’s in education from the Bank Street College of Education in New York, one of the nation’s premier schools for early childhood education. Her master’s work included a special course of studies at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

“After working for several years in finance and banking, I decided to pursue a career in education, with a focus on early education, because of my fervent belief in the power of education to improve society,” said Wiltshire. “Education played a critical role in my life. The teachers I had at a young age propelled me to accomplish goals that would have seemed too arduous for my circumstances, but they believed in me, and ignited a passion in me for learning. They taught me to dream big and work hard. That is exactly what I intend to do for future generations.”
