The 2014 Tennessee History Teacher of the Year is...

Not only are Metro students achieving great things, but our teachers are being recognized for their outstanding work, too. Seth Swihart, a history teacher at Hillsboro High School, was recently named the 2014 Tennessee History Teacher of the Year by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, HISTORY and Preserve America. In addition, he is now in the running for the National History Teacher of the Year award, along with just fifty-three other candidates.

The award comes with a basket full of prizes, but they don't go to Mr. Swihart. Instead, all prizes will be given to the Hillsboro High School library. They include some cash and access to an archive of books and historical resources. Hillsboro will also be named a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School, which means teachers will have access to lesson plans and toolkits for their classrooms.

So thanks to Mr. Swihart, all Hillsboro students will have more history at their fingertips.

He was chosen for this award by a panel of educators and administrators from Tennessee because of his career achievements in education, the inspiration he gives his students and his use of primary documents in his classroom. He is both a National Board Certified teacher and an International Baccalaureate examiner.

Congratulations Mr. Swihart! We are thankful for your hard work and dedication to Metro students!
