Metro Schools names permanent director of transportation

Taffy Marsh will further the major improvements she started last school year

After engineering dramatic improvements in school bus service for students and families, Taffy Marsh will take over as director of transportation on a permanent basis. Marsh served nearly the entire school year as the interim director. During that time she restructured the department and made changes to everything from hiring practices to repair shop hours resulting in fewer late buses and higher family satisfaction.

“We knew Taffy was the right person for the job, and she exceeded our expectations very quickly,” said Chief Operating Officer Fred Carr. “She’s worked in logistics for some of the biggest and most complex companies in the world, so managing our fleet of yellow buses is a natural fit. I anticipate continued success as her tenure goes on.”

Be the end of the 2013-14 school year, Metro Schools families were reaping big benefits from Marsh’s leadership:

  • 91% reduction in morning late buses from 2012-13 to 2013-14
  • 83% reduction in afternoon late buses from 2012-13 to 2013-14
  • Fewer absent employees and improved morale

Marsh has a master’s degree in organizational management with an emphasis on process reengineering. She spent 20 years working in logistics with UPS, FedEx and other Fortune 500 companies. She joined Metro Schools first as a consultant, eventually being hired to oversee Central Services where she was responsible for the district’s supply chain network and distribution center.

Each day, the fleet of 650 Metro Schools buses transports 50,000 students safely to and from school. When school starts Wednesday, August 6, those buses, the drivers and monitors will be the first faces students see for the new school year.

Soon, families will be able to look up their bus stop and routes online. When families have questions about bus arrival times, routes or other transportation topics, their first call should always be to the Customer Service Center. The trained representatives there can give bus arrival times and answer any questions. During the school year, the Customer Service Center is open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 259-INFO (4636).
