MLK wins French award from American teachers

MLKWhat's this? Another major award for Martin Luther King, Jr. Magnet School? Why, they were just named one of the top schools in the state! And they have three National Merit Scholars this year! Surely they can't win yet another honor in 2015. Oh yes they can.

The American Association of Teachers of French has given its award of Exemplary with Honors to MLK. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding quality of the French program. MLK is one of only ten schools in the nation to receive this newly instituted award.

Thanks to its excellent program, MLK has increased its enrollment in French throughout the past four years. So that students can get the most out of it, MLK offers early language learning in middle school and advanced courses later on, including Advanced Placement. The program makes use of innovative and creative methods in teaching, gives standards-based assessments and offers numerous cultural activities beyond the classroom. The school also participates in the AATF National French Contest and inducts students into the National French Honor Society, with many honorees annually.

MLK’s French teacher, Ms. Jane Weaver, shows excellent preparation, steady commitment to professional development, and enthusiastic dedication to her work. Dr. Angela Carr, Executive Principal, and Dr. Linda Miller, Assistant Principal - who is also supervising principal for MLK’s World Language Department - are consistently committed to the teaching of French and to preparing their students for the challenges of living in our global world. Administrators, parents, students and graduates have all praised the program and teacher in glowing terms. Graduates have continued to use French and the skills they acquired in college and in their careers, such as teaching, business, and government.

The American Association of Teachers of French, founded in 1927, is the largest association of French teachers in the world, with close to 9,000 members. It offers enrichment and support to teachers, and recognizes high achievement in teachers and students.
