Glengarry Elementary's Emily Sanford named 2015-16 TAEA First Year Art Educator of the Year

Emily Sanford Art Teacher of the Year The Tennessee Art Education Association (TAEA) has chosen Ms. Emily Sanford as the 2015-16 TAEA First Year Art Educator of the Year.

Ms. Sanford was hired to teach at Glengarry Elementary School in January. Taking over a position mid-year can be challenging, but Ms. Sanford quickly established her expectations and made the room her own, growing to find her own voice as an art educator.  Ms. Sanford graduated from Belmont University with honors in December 2014 where she served as President of Belmont’s Student Chapter of TAEA.

Ms. Sanford was honored at the TAEA Fall Professional Development Conference at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg during an awards dinner on October 29. The conference was sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission.

First Year Art Educator of the Year Award is given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. "Ms. Sanford exemplifies the highly qualified individuals who are in the field of art education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to the profession," the Tennessee Art Education Association said in a news release.

The Tennessee Art Education Association is a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance quality visual arts education through advocacy, leadership, professional development, and to promote a cohesive professional community.

The membership of TAEA includes elementary, middle level and high school art teachers in Tennessee, representatives from Tennessee’s major art museums, arts councils, and major colleges and universities throughout Tennessee.

Congrats to Ms. Sanford and the Glengarry Elementary School community for such a great honor!
