Selection Day is Friday, January 15. This is how it works.


Selection Day is upon us.  A random drawing is held to fill available seats in schools listed on the Optional Schools applications that were submitted by the December 4 deadline. On Friday, January 15, the results from the random selection process are available, beginning at 9 a.m.

This year, a total of 30,919 applications were submitted, representing 9,211 who applied. About 92 percent of those applications, or 28,455, were submitted online.

How do I get my Selection Day results?

To view Selection Day results, go to You can also get your Selection Day results by calling the Customer Service Center at (615) 259-4636. On January 20, your results will also be mailed to the address you listed on the Optional Schools application.

How do I accept the school I was selected for?

If your child is selected for a seat at a school, you will receive an acceptance letter in the mail, which must be returned by Feb. 5, 2016. You may also have the option of accepting your child’s seat online and receive confirmation. If you accept online, it is not necessary to return the paper acceptance letter.

If your child is not selected for a particular school, he/she will be placed on a waitlist for the 2016-17 school year – unless the school was listed lower on your priority list than a school where your child was offered a seat. Your child will be “opted out” of any schools that were listed lower on your priority list than a school that your child was selected to attend. This process is designed to give families the option of attending their highest-ranked school where space is available.

Once a student has accepted a seat at an optional school, his/her name will be removed from any currently attended or previously accepted school for the 2016-17 school year. Accepting a seat in an out of zone school forfeits their seat if they are currently attending an out of zone school.Students must attend school on the first day or they will be considered a “no-show” and their positions will be filled.

What’s a pull?

The Office of School Options does four “pulls” between January and mid-July. That’s when students are “pulled” from wait lists to fill new vacancies in high-demand schools. It’s another opportunity for students to get into the schools they wanted.

Each pull determines an estimated number of vacancies that are available for a school and pulls students from an existing waiting list, assigning that student a position.

If you are still waiting on another choice or higher priority school that was on your Optional Schools application, wait for the 1st Pull Acceptance Letter, which will be mailed on Wednesday, March 2 and must be returned by March 18.

2nd Pull Letters are mailed on Wednesday, April 6 and must be returned on Friday, April 22.

3rd Pull Letters are mailed on Wednesday, June 15 and must be returned by Friday, July 1.

4th Pull Letters are mailed on Wednesday, July 13 and must be returned by Friday, July 29.

You should receive a letter to verify your school assignment for the 2016-2017 school year around mid-May. Your verification letter should be returned to the Office of School Options by May 27.

A few notes to keep in mind:

  • The Preschool and Pre-K applications for Stanford Elementary and Hull-Jackson Elementary are not included in the January 15 Selection Day. Results for the Pre-K/Preschool applications will be available in mid-May.
  • Nashville Big Picture High School and MNPS Middle College High School require interviews separate from the Selection Day process.
  • For the first time, Creswell Middle Prep School of the Arts is holding auditions to select students into the conservatory that best fits their skill set.
