Cadets raise more than $300 for Ms. Cheap's Penny Drive
A Metro Schools' JROTC cadet troup at Maplewood High School involving 40 students, and a dozen school faculty raised more than $300 through Ms. Cheap's Penny Drive.
"They were so excited to help others and proud that their collection efforts would provide more than 1200 meals to feed to homeless or the needy," said Lt. Colonel Martha Shaffer.
"They now want to volunteer in the distribution center; they realize they are the giving back to their community in a way that is so rewarding! Most of them said, 'It was a challenge well worth the effort and time; I feel grateful to be able to help others!'"
Shaffer established the penny collection began as an annual community involvement program for the Air Force JROTC program four years ago.The first collection total was $57.00. Now that they have more than quadrupled that amount, the cadet troup has set their sights on $500 for next year.
