Metro Schools honors staff at 2018-19 Teacher of the Year banquet

TOY On Tuesday, May 1, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) honored the best of the best at its annual Teacher of the Year Ceremony.

More than 130 teachers, three principals and three substitutes were recognized for their incredible impact on the lives MNPS students.

Dr. Monique Felder, chief academic officer, and Anna Shepherd, chair of the Board of Education, were among the speakers that praised the good efforts and dedication of this year’s recipients.

"Teachers of the Year, you may not hear this nearly enough, but thank you for all you do each and every day to bring out the best in every child," said Dr. Felder. "Thank you for dedicating your lives to the betterment of our society and for being keepers and generous purveyors of knowledge. Thank you for keeping within sight the educational end game for each and every child while juggling your own lives, families, hopes and dreams."

The Teacher of the Year award is unique in that all recipients were chosen by their fellow colleagues and principals as the epitome of a model educator. This program provides much-deserved recognition to teachers on a district, regional, state and national level. To select the district-wide winners, teachers were scored on characteristics of a well-rounded educator including relationships with students, leadership and overall academic performance of students.

Nine district-level finalists were selected – one winner and two runners-up from each school tier.

At Tuesday night's annual event, there was an error in the list which resulted in one of the middle school runner up recipients mistakenly being announced as the middle school winner. The district deeply regrets this mistake and has contacted both teachers with an apology.
