After-School Supper Locations Announced

For the fifth year, Metro Nashville Public Schools will serve students with wraparound services through its After-School Supper Program, which addresses hunger outside of the classroom – in a student’s home. Through federal funding, offered through the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), the program provides meals and snacks to children in low-income areas, ages 18 and under, on weekends and during school holidays.

During the 2017-2018 school year, the program served 75-percent more students than in the previous school year. This was in partly due to the immense generosity from community partners like the YMCA Fun Company, the Nashville After Zone Alliance, the Boys and Girls Club and others. Approximately 3,000 more students received well-balanced, nutritious after-school meals, helping to eliminate the worry and anxiety that comes from hunger.

“Each year, we see an increased demand for after-school supper,” said Jenny Bell, director of extended learning services for the district. “This increased demand is not only a result of food insecurity but also expansion of after-school programs across Metro Schools.”

Meals are served immediately upon school dismissal to children in applicable schools and after-school programs. Families do not need to opt-in for the program if their children attend participating schools. There is no additional charge for meals provided to eligible children/adults without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
