Buena Vista Elementary Shares in the Spirit of Giving
During this is the time of the year, it is sometimes easy to fall into the “gift giving” frenzy and forget the true meaning of giving. But the faculty and staff at Buena Vista Elementary School got it right Saturday, Dec. 8 and showed exactly what the power of giving means.
The school, led by Principal Myra Taylor, hosted its first Holiday and Toy Breakfast for the families of their students. While there had been similar events in the past in which parents were not engaged in the process, this year was different. More than 200 parents were invited to pick up to three holiday toys for their children. The toys were purchased and donated by dozens of individuals, community partners and business partners.
“We are so glad to be able to serve our families in this capacity, especially during a time of year where things can be particularly hard for so many,” said Principal Taylor. “This event was a success because of the invaluable partners who support Buena Vista.”
In addition to toy shopping, parents were treated to breakfast and were assisted by personal shoppers who helped parents find just the right toys sorted by age and grade level for their children. The toys were placed in black bags to maintain the “surprise” for the children who were downstairs having holiday fun in the school’s library. The gifting continued providing families with food bags, winter coats and free books for children.
Families were encouraged to design custom thank-you notes to the partners and volunteers who made the event possible.
