This week’s MNPS MVP Abigail Hawkins – Two Rivers Middle School
Abigail Hawkins participates in a long list of extracurricular activities at Two Rivers Middle School. As an honor roll student, she belongs to the Strings Club, Entrepreneurship Club, Encore, participates as a morning school announcer and Student Lighthouse Leader. With everything on her already busy schedule, Hawkins still makes time to add volleyball to her list.
“During physical education class we were learning how to play volleyball,” Hawkins said. “The teacher saw me playing with the other students and suggested that I try out for the school’s volleyball team. I had never played volleyball before; I was just hoping I would do well.”
Her tryout was successful landing her a spot on the Two Rivers Middle School Pirates team. She takes her participation seriously and even asked her parents for a volleyball in the school’s colors for Christmas to help improve her game. As a new player to the sport, with the help of her coach, Hawkins learned each position on the team. She perfected the setter position and started in every game this past volleyball season. Hawkins affectionately credits her grandfather, an athlete himself, for her athleticism, who attended every game.
“I appreciate Abigail’s enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the game of volleyball,” Coach Ana Del Rio said. “She displays leadership in everything that she does for Two Rivers Middle. Abigail embodies what a student-athlete looks like.”
When Hawkins is not busy with volleyball or making and selling shea butter and bath salts for the Entrepreneurship Club or serving with the Student Lighthouse Leadership team, she works on her parents’ farm. She feeds and tends to seven sheep, two goats, and five cows – one of which is named Sky, a milk cow she raised from birth, that will be turning two soon.
