This week’s #MNPSMVP is Ellie Smith – Hillwood High School
As Ellie Smith reflects on her soccer career at Hillwood High School, she is now preparing to envision herself playing the game with her new teammates. Smith recently accepted a scholarship to play soccer at Maryville College and she couldn’t be more ready to play her first game.
“My family are my biggest supporters,” Smith said. “Playing in college is a big deal and I hope that they continue to support all the way in Nashville. Maryville is not too far away and I’m hoping for games close to home.”
At five years old she began to play soccer. As she got older, her mother hoped she would gravitate to softball but soccer continued to be her favorite sport. Her discipline in perfecting game techniques and workout ethics led her to be recruited to play indoor soccer and travel soccer – basically soccer all-year round.
Smith has played all four years at Hillwood, even serving as the team captain for the Hilltoppers. During that time, she was named “2017 District Offense Most Valuable Player” and “2018 District Defense Most Valuable Player,” an award voted on by soccer coaches from across the district.
“It was an honor to represent the district and I was excited to receive both awards,” she said. “I hope that I can do just as well when I play in college. It has been great playing for Hillwood.”
Smith dominates on the soccer field as well as off the field. A stellar student, she has a grade point average of 4.3 and is enrolled in three Advanced Placement courses. Smith is a member of the National Honors Society and serves as a school ambassador. She received the “Good Citizen Award,” which is voted on by Hillwood High faculty and staff. Additionally, Smith spends most of her Friday afternoons at Preston Taylor Ministries working with children in the after-school program.
“Ellie epitomizes the total package as a student-athlete and has the most kind, compassionate and caring nature,” said Hillwood Soccer Coach Margaret Shuff. “She is not only top caliber on the field, she is also one of our top performing seniors academically. She is one of the best female soccer players to come through Hillwood High School.”
