#MNPSVoices – Nancy (Diane) Bain – Eakin Elementary, Administrator of School Financial Payroll Records

Whether a student, parent, or faculty member, walking into the Eakin Elementary School front office guarantees one thing – being greeted with a smile and maybe a big hug. from the Administrator of School Financial Payroll Records, Diane Bain.

That burst of friendliness comes from Nancy “Diane” Bain, a product of Metro Nashville Public Schools. She has been employed with the district for the past 31 years and currently serves as administrator of school financial payroll records at Eakin. After graduating from Cohn High School, she married her high school sweetheart and soon pursued a career as a certified nursing technician. But it wasn’t long before Bain had a change of heart relative to her career choice.

“I remember an explosion that occurred in Waverly and after that, I remember thinking, ‘this is not the career for me,’ Bain said.

Bain and her husband, who were married for 42 years before his sudden passing in 2018, were blessed with their first child, Jerri Dee, early in their marriage. In 1988, Bain accepted a part-time position at Cockrill Elementary School.

“I only wanted to work part-time so that I could take care of my only child at the time,” she said. “Jerri Dee was a special-needs child and required my attention. Once God gave me a special child, I felt a special calling to work with students; children are my heart and I just enjoy every day with them.”

Ms. Diane, as she is affectionately known, became a part of the Eakin Elementary family 27 years ago, in a full-time capacity. At her job, Bain is known for always being helpful to students and fellow co-workers and she credits her parents for the helpful, loving spirit she exudes every day.

“My parents taught me to treat others the way you want to be treated,” Bain said. “I want people to feel welcomed when they come into the office each day.”

Along with greeting families and staff at Eakin, Bain also manages other daily duties such as ordering supplies for the school, processing payroll and serving as the school’s bookkeeper. When she is not at Eakin, she enjoys spending time with her church family, with her son and other family members, and traveling to places like Gatlinburg and Walt Disney World.

Bain believes her faith has kept her strong through her life’s journey, and for that she is appreciative. She said she plans to continue loving and hugging on MNPS students, parents and teachers for a few more years with the goal of continuing to make people smile.
