"Every Student Known" Song

"Every Student Known"

"Cada Estudiante Valorado"

A Metro Schools Anthem Written and Performed by Students

MNPS has an Emmy-winning song to match its mission, and students have now recorded it in two languages.

“Every Student Known,” a song written and recorded by MNPS students and music educators in Nashville studios in the summer of 2024, made its debut at an event on Music Row and is available for listening and viewing on streaming services and YouTube.

"Every Student Known: The Creation of an Anthem," a 9-minute documentary about the making of the song, won a Midsouth Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on February 15. Meanwhile, "Cada Estudiante Valorado," the Spanish-language version of the song, was recorded in the fall of 2024 - with translation of the lyrics into Spanish by Manuel Delgado, owner of Delgado Guitars - and was released February 20 on YouTube.

“I could not be any prouder of our students or more excited about this song as a statement of what our schools work to do,” said Dr. Adrienne Battle, MNPS’s Director of Schools. “It perfectly captures our mantra of Every Student Known, which means that we work every day to understand every student’s talents, interests, passions, and possibilities while helping them work to overcome any challenges they face. This song tells that story beautifully.”

How the Song Was Created

MNPS’s Visual and Performing Arts director, Franklin Willis, put out a call toward the end of the 2023-24 school year for students from across the district to contribute their thoughts about what Every Student Known means to them. The district then convened a four-day songwriting summit that summer. The students visited Capitol Christian Music Group and recorded at Universal Music Group Nashville’s studios in Berry Hill.

The students worked with two MNPS music specialists, Dee Hammonds and Bryson Finney, to write and record the song. Music Makes Us paid for the production of a music video and a nine-minute documentary about the students and the recording process, while Capitol Christian Music Group and UMG Nashville donated their studios and services.

“This is what our work as educators is all about: helping students express themselves, stretch themselves, and see what’s possible for them,” Willis said. “I was bursting with joy – and a few tears – when I saw and heard the results, and I know many more people will feel the same way.”

After the success of writing and recording the song, district leaders decided MNPS should have a Spanish-language version to represent the nearly 40 percent of students who speak Spanish. To bring this project to life, Willis collaborated with several teachers, including Hannah Marshall, whose choir students from Wright Middle School provided vocals. The recording also featured two high school vocalists — one from Nashville School of the Arts and another from John Overton High School. Additionally, two student guitarists from Antioch High School participated under the guidance of their music teacher, Rock Kennedy.

Throughout the fall, the students rehearsed the song multiple times using Delgado's translation of the lyrics. To further prepare them, Delgado, musician Rachel Rodriguez, and Finney led workshops before the students recorded the song at Ocean Way Nashville Studios on Music Row in December.

Willis and his team worked on a curriculum based on the song that arts educators throughout the district started using in the 2024-25 school year.
