Safety System
Weapons Detection Units
At Metro Nashville Public Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priorities. One measure in place to do so is the Evolv concealed weapons detection units at all MNPS high schools, expanding soon to middle schools.
These units allow for the enhancement of school safety and security while ensuring a welcoming and efficient entry process. Our goal has been to implement consistent, effective, and minimally disruptive safety enhancements for every high school in the district. Following our evaluation of this initiative, we will be expanding to middle schools throughout the district at a rate of approximately two per week, starting after Fall Break in 2025.
What is Evolv?
Evolv is an advanced weapons detection system that enhances school security without the delays of traditional metal detectors. The system uses artificial intelligence and low-frequency radio waves to scan for potential threats while allowing students and staff to move quickly and naturally through the school’s entry points.
This technology is already used in hundreds of schools across the country, as well as at stadiums, concert venues, and other public spaces. The systems we are proposing to lease would incorporate upgrades from Motorola that would integrate into our existing security system platform, Avigilon.
What to Expect When You Arrive
- Walk through naturally – Students can enter as usual, carrying their backpacks.
- Minimizing false alerts – Students may be asked to remove laptops or other large metal objects to help reduce unnecessary screenings.
- Quick and focused checks – If the system flags an item, staff will conduct a brief secondary screening in a designated area.
This process ensures safety while maintaining a welcoming environment where students start their day without unnecessary delays.
Why We’re Doing This
We recognize school safety is a shared responsibility, and the expansion of Evolv is one step in a broader multi-layered approach to security. This initiative aligns with other safety measures already in place, including:
- Trained security personnel – School Resource Officers (SROs) and MNPS security teams.
- Controlled building access – Video entry systems, security vestibules, and shatter-resistant film installations.
- Enhanced technology – Security cameras and emergency communication tools.
- School safety plans – Developed in partnership with Metro Nashville Police and practiced regularly through drills.
While no single solution can eliminate the risk of gun violence, we are committed to making our schools as safe as possible.
We're Committed to Your Safety
We know this is a challenging time, and we want every student, staff member, and family to feel confident that we are taking every step possible to ensure safety in our schools. Together, we can create safer learning environments while ensuring that every student feels welcomed, valued, and protected at school.
