MNPS is introducing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education in a responsible and supportive way to assist both teaching and learning.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to computer systems or programs that can perform tasks that usually require human thinking. This includes things like recognizing patterns, solving problems, or generating text and images.

Importantly, the AI tools used in MNPS are carefully reviewed and approved to make sure tool are safe, private, and age-appropriate. We do not allow AI tools that interact with or collect personal student information without going through the proper approval process.

AI is not a replacement for teachers or learning. Instead, it’s a support tool—just like calculators, spelling checkers, or educational videos. Students still need to think critically, solve problems, and engage with their teachers and classmates.

AI shall enhance educational outcomes by supporting both teaching and student learning through personalized and adaptive educational experiences.

Human-Centric Approach

AI deployments shall prioritize human welfare and values, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces human efforts in educational settings.

Privacy, Data Protection, and Security

Protecting personal and sensitive information is crucial, complying with applicable local, state, and federal laws to ensure student and staff data privacy and security.

Ethical & Responsible Use

AI shall be used in a manner that is morally sound and responsible, avoiding harm and maximizing benefits while aligning with societal norms and expectations.

Equity and Inclusivity

AI tools shall be accessible to all students regardless of their backgrounds and should not perpetuate or exacerbate existing inequalities.

Transparency

The district shall ensure that AI systems used by students and/or employees, as well as those embedded within vendor products, are understandable with clear explanations of how decisions are made, fostering trust and accountability.

Administrative Procedures

The Director of Schools will develop administrative procedures as necessary to implement this policy.

Academic Integrity and AI

MNPS is committed to ensuring AI is used ethically and responsibly. Our Academic Integrity Statement emphasizes:

Students must complete assignments honestly, using AI only when permitted by teachers.
Educators will model appropriate AI use and teach students how to leverage these tools effectively and ethically.
Any misuse of AI (plagiarism, misrepresentation, or inappropriate tool use) will be addressed in accordance with district academic policies.
