Johnson Alternative Learning Center serves fifth through 12th grade students and is an alternative learning center where the goal is to ensure all students complete the academic requirements to prepare for the transition back to their assigned school.
While at Johnson, a STEM school, students have access to the arts, the Academies of Nashville, and career and technical education programs. They also participate in music, digital art and design, journalism, and music recording.
Johnson ALC practices blended learning, which exposes students to both digital and traditional methods of teaching, and project-based service learning, which allows students to work on engaging and complex questions, problems, or challenges.
Johnson has chosen to be a restorative community through conflict resolution methods and strategies to cut down on student infractions, suspensions, and expulsions and to strengthen social-emotional learning. Also, small class sizes allow for more intentional interventions.

- Promoting "Voice and Choice"
- Circle Meetings, focusing on equality, equity, safety and trust, responsibility, ownership, building relationships, and community mindset, just to name a few.
“We demonstrate Every Student Known by implementing an orientation process to teach the Johnson way and learn the strengths of our students,” Executive Principal Myron Franklin said. “Next we develop an Individual Student Response Plan to optimize student success.”
The school also offers a family resource center, English language classes, and a clothing closet to support their community and families.
The Johnson ALC building began in 1955 as Johnson Elementary School, which was so full that the library and auditorium had to be used as temporary classrooms. The school was named after the highly respected former teacher and principal Hugh J. Johnson. He taught at Pearl-Cohn High School and then led Cameron Junior High School.
