Rose Park Magnet Math and Science Middle School is a Tennessee Reward School serving students in grades 5-8. It opened in 1963 to serve families in the Edgehill community just southwest of downtown.
The school’s name, which coincides with that of a neighboring Metro park, honors the late Reverend E.S. Rose, who was the pastor of a nearby community church and an effective community leader.
Rose Park is the only school in MNPS that is dually certified as a STEAM school. It received an international/national STEAM certification by Cognia and certification by the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network (TSIN).
STEAM is embedded throughout the curriculum in every class every day. Rose Park’s teachers make intentional connections about the "Why" (future jobs/careers) and the "What" (content learning standards). Faculty members accomplish this by engaging their students in experiences that involve the “4 Cs” of learning: communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.
Along with offering STEAM personalized experiences, Rose Park teachers and staff use the following strategies to make Every Student Known:
- Trained staff members host morning meetings to improve student voice in the classroom. Staff implement community circles daily to encourage student engagement.
- Staff host weekly birthday celebrations for their students to ensure every student is celebrated on or near their birthday.
- After Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments, each student meets with the executive principal, assistant principal, literacy coach, numeracy coach, school counselor, school social worker and librarian to create individual action plans that align with their MAP data.
These strategies coincide with Rose Park’s school motto: "A School Where We Create Connections Every Day."
