How MSAP Magnet Schools are Tackling Chronic Absenteeism
Magnet School Assistance Program (MSAP) schools offer hands-on learning experiences that expose students to new careers and innovative ways of thinking.
So our students don't miss out on the unique opportunities available at school, we put an emphasis on attendance. Particularly since student attendance has become a concern nationwide.
In fact, 72% of schools in the United States reported an increase in absenteeism during the 2021-22 school year compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to the School Pulse Panel. While research shows some improvement in chronic absenteeism across states in 2023, rates remain 75% higher than before the pandemic. The National Center for Education Statistics has found a clear link between rising absenteeism and declining student performance.
To address the issue locally, the schools have been implementing creative strategies to encourage attendance: From pizza parties and school shout-outs to engaging parents in conversations about the impact of chronic absenteeism. And, one leader had an idea to make attendance both a priority, and something fun and engaging.
A New Attendance Theme Song and Video
Dr. ReGina Etter, director of MSAP magnet schools and a champion of engaging professional development, realized that attendance could be made "cool." After an attendance lesson with parents, inspiration struck—why not use music to grab their attention? That’s when the original Attendance Matters song was born with powerful lyrics like “Being at school helps me to prepare. For my future, I MUST BE THERE!”
“To put it simply, Attendance Matters because our students’ futures matter,” Dr. Etter said.
With the help of local artist Chris Zondaflex Tyler, the powerful vocals of Wright Global Media & Mass Communications Magnet Middle students, and the on-trend dance moves from Creswell Middle Magnet School of the Visual & Performing Arts, the Attendance Matters song and music video came to life. Featuring students in MSAP schools—learning, playing, and celebrating milestones like kindergarten and high school graduation—the video aims to engage the entire community. The goal of the video is to spark meaningful conversations and actions that lead to improved attendance and brighter futures for MNPS students.
A recent study looking at young children found that absenteeism in kindergarten was associated with negative first grade outcomes such as greater absenteeism in subsequent years and lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.
By making attendance exciting and engaging, MSAP magnet schools are not only tackling a pressing issue but also reinforcing a culture where every day in school matters.
