Academic Magnet Entrance Requirements

 

2025-2026 Academic Requirements

Please review the academic criteria for each school before submitting an application:

  • Meigs Middle School (grades 6-8); Martin Luther King Jr. School (grades 7-12) and Hume-Fogg High School (grades 9-12)
    • 80 GPA or higher (Quarter 3, Quarter 4 and Quarter 1)
    • No missing or failing grades
    • Met/exceeded expectations or a composite national stanine minimum of 14 in both Math and English Language Arts
  • Early College High School (grades 9-12)
    • Grades 9 and 10: state or composite national stanine of 10 or higher
    • Grade 11: minimum of 21 ACT or on the SAT a minimum score of 490 in English, 500  in math, 500 in critical reading

Application Eligibility Requirements 

To be eligible to apply for a school with academic entrance requirements the following conditions must be met:

  • The child’s parent or guardian must be a resident of Davidson County to apply for an optional school.
  • The child must have an MNPS-issued student identification number issued by an MNPS enrollment center.
  • The child must meet an academic grade average and subject specifications listed.
  • The child must meet the eligible testing requirements listed.

    Academic Grade Average and Subject Specifications
    • Students must have an academic average of 80 or above for all subjects combined for the spring semester of the previous school year and the first grading period (whether six weeks or nine weeks) of the current school year, with no failing grades for any grading period (whether six weeks or nine weeks) in this time frame.
    • A summer pathway is available for students attending Head, Rose Park, John Early, and Meigs middle schools who have become eligible with an academic average of 80 or above for all subjects combined for the second, third, and fourth nine weeks of the current school year, with no failing grades for any grading period (whether six weeks or nine weeks) in this time frame and meet the testing requirements with the December 2024 Academic Magnet Qualify, Extended-Form Benchmarks or the Spring 2025 TCAP Achievement and/or End-of-Course exams.
      • Summer pathway notification will occur in late July after the State of Tennessee standardized testing scores are
        available.

    Testing Requirements for Eligibility

    For entrance into a magnet school with academic entrance requirements during the 2025-2026 school year, a student can meet the assessment requirements as follows:

    • Students wishing to apply to Meigs Middle School, Martin Luther King Jr. School, or Hume-Fogg High School may qualify with:
      • 2024 TCAP scores of met or exceeded expectations in math and English/language arts (ELA)
      • Or a 2024 TCAP math and English/language arts (ELA) composite stanine score of 14 or higher
    • Fifth and eighth grade students may also qualify with December’s 2024 Academic Magnet Qualifying, Extended-Form Benchmark math and English/language arts scores. Note that these Academic Magnet Qualifying Benchmark assessments are only administered once per year and differ from other benchmark assessments given.
    • Students applying to Early College for 9th and 10th grade may qualify with:
      • 2024 TCAP scores of met or exceeded expectations in math and English/language arts (ELA)
      • Or a 2024 TCAP math and English/language arts (ELA) composite stanine score of 10 or higher
      • Or December’s Academic Magnet Qualifying, Extended-Form Benchmark scores of met or exceeded expectations in math and English/language arts (ELA)
      • Or December’s Academic Magnet Qualifying, Extended-Form Benchmark math and English/language arts (ELA) composite stanine score of 10 or higher
    • Incoming 11th grade applicants to Early College High School must have:
      • A minimum score of 21 on the ACT
      • Or a minimum score of the below on the SAT:
        • 490 in English
        • 500 in math
        • 500 in critical reading
  • English Learners
    English Learners

    English learners who are currently enrolled in MNPS can meet the standardized test requirement with just one subject instead of two: either reading/English/language arts or math.

    For entrance into academic magnets during the 2025-2026 school year, an English learner (EL) student can meet the assessment requirements in any one of the following ways:

    • An EL student will meet the requirement with a score of met expectations or exceeded expectations in ELA or math on the 2024 TCAP assessment.
    • An EL student will meet the requirement with a TCAP state stanine of 7 or higher in either ELA or math.
    • EL students in grades 5 or 8 will meet the requirement with a qualifying score in ELA or math on the Winter 2024 District Benchmark assessments.
    • An EL student who is new to MNPS or perhaps even new to Tennessee and who does not have TCAP or District Benchmark scores can qualify by submitting test results from a nationally normed achievement test.
      • For Meigs Middle School, Martin Luther King Jr. School, and Hume-Fogg High School, a score of 7 national stanine or above for either reading/language arts and/or math will qualify.
      • For Early College High School, a national stanine score of 5 or above will qualify.
  • Davidson County Students who are New to MNPS
    Davidson County Students who are New to MNPS
    A Davidson County student who is new to MNPS, the state of Tennessee, is currently a homeschool student, and/or currently enrolled in a private school may qualify with the following:
    • 2024 Tennessee TCAP scores of met or exceeded expectations in math and English/language arts (ELA) and/or a composite national stanine of 14 or higher
    • Academic average of 80 or above for all combined subjects (Q3, Q4, and Q1 grades) with no failing grades for any grading period, whether six weeks or nine weeks
    • Recent (spring 2023-2024 or later) nationally normed achievement test score composite stanines totaling 14 or higher for both math and English/language arts (ELA)

    If a student does not have recent test scores, families may choose to arrange and pay for a privately administered nationally normed achievement test. All nationally normed achievement tests must have been administered at a school or national testing center and administered in a secure, in-person environment.
